Characteristics a Lead Guitarist needs – Where to start and where it will take you.

Learning to play and master an instrument is a magical thing. For most people that learn to play the guitar, their dream is to play in front of their friends and family, and for many the dream is even bigger. Playing on the big stage, in front of millions of screaming fans is what it’s all about, but there are several characteristics a lead guitarist needs to be able to accomplish this goal.

First of all understanding the role of a lead guitarist is a major key in actually becoming the lead. The lead guitarist is a major role in deciding songs the band will play. Along with the lead vocalist, the lead guitarist is also a huge role in the energy that is portrayed on stage. Being able to keep the attention of the crowd is very important.

Knowing what type of music you can play is important. If you are a blues type of player, then there is no point in trying out for a heavy metal band, and vice-versa. Feeling comfortable on stage and with the music you are playing is one of the main characteristics a lead guitarist needs.

Below are listed 5 key points that will help you on your way to becoming a lead guitarist:

  1. Know what you want from you experience.
Having a clear goal in mind of where you want to be is a great place to start. Knowing where you want your journey to take you is a great characteristic to have.
  2. Have the right attitude.
Knowing what you want and how you will get it is great, but keeping that positive attitude once you are on stage is another thing. Remember they are there to see you and the band. Don’t let the crowed take advantage of you and you will be great.
  3. Practice.
Just because you are in a band now, doesn’t mean you don’t have to practice. You will never know everything, so it can never hurt to keep learning new skills.
  4. Skill.
There are so many things that can make your performance on stage that much more amazing to watch. Think of all the stand out lead guitarists. Do they just stand on stage and strum their guitar? They are up there giving the crowed a great show each and every time. That’s what will make you stand out from the rest!
  5. Respect and discipline.
When you decide to join a band, you have to remember there are usually 3 or 4 (and sometimes even more) other members of that band. You have to learn how to respect the decisions and opinions of others in the band. Working with others can sometimes be a challenge. Find people you are comfortable working with.

So as you can see there are many characteristics a lead guitarist needs in order to be a successful player. But the success does not lie only in the lead guitarist. No matter how good you are, if you are in a band that has no chemistry together, then no one will want to come listen to you. Take your time and find the right group of people to play with. You may end up joining a few different bands before you find the one you are happy in, but its great practice and will pay off in the end!
